Why CrossFit is the Secret Weapon for Your Next Running Race

Are you a Runner and do you know if you are strong enough to be running yet? Whether it's a local run in the park or a competive 10km or half marathon you have planned, have you included Strength, Speed and Stamina training into your preparations.

At CrossFit® Leixlip, we believe the most robust runners are built in the gym as much as on the track. When CrossFit® is coached right and the exercise is prescribed appropriately to you in class, you will achieve massive benefits to your running strength, stamina, capacity, and speed.

Strength Under Pressure: Moving Well When it Matters

In CrossFit®, we understand that strength for running is not just about how heavy you can lift a barbell in a vacuum. It comes down to how many quality reps with good mechanics you can perform while in a fatigued state. Think about the final 5km of a race: your heart rate is high, your lungs are burning, and your form starts to break down. This is exactly what CrossFit® trains you for. We teach you to stay focused and move efficiently while being metabolically challenged. By training your body to maintain integrity under stress, you ensure that your running gait remains powerful and safe, even when the finish line feels miles away.

Loving Running!

Are You "Race Ready"?

Many people view running as a "cardio-only" sport, but every time your foot hits the pavement, your body absorbs a force of 2.5 to 3 times your body weight. Not doing any strength training with your running program is an injury waiting to happen. Without a foundation, your connective tissues take the hit that your muscles should be absorbing.

The Strength Standards

Before you ramp up the mileage, it is wise to have baseline "strength benchmarks" in place.

Understanding Capacity: The "Prescription" of Fitness

In CrossFit®, we prescribe running at different doses and intensities based on a person's strength, experience, and mobility—much like a GP prescribes the right dose of an antibiotic.

Take the workout "Murph" (1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, 1-mile run). The intended stimulus is 30 to 60 minutes. If it takes significantly longer, you may not yet have the capacity for that volume. Similarly, in Hyrox or TRYKA races (running 4km to 8km total), the average finish time is 90 minutes to 2 hours. Pushing far beyond that without the proper foundation often results in injury or extreme over-training.

Why the CrossFit® Methodology is Brilliant for You

In CrossFit®, we cover all 10 General Physical Skills. We combine Olympic Weightlifting, Gymnastics, Erg machine training, jumping, and throwing to ensure you are conditioned to handle any challenge.
